LUGANDA DREAMSThe Lugansk region is located in the eastern Ukraine and borders Russia. The economic foundation of this region comes from coal mining and metallurgical plants. Most of these were built during the Soviet era and are now in poor condition. Many of them are closed and have been stripped for scrap metal by the local residents. The joblessness and unbearable living conditions have forced citizens of small towns to move to more successful regions. In the local slang, the Lugansk region is called “Luganda”. The name is derived from the names of Lugansk and Uganda (the country in Central Africa where most people live below the poverty line and are much poorer than those in Ukraine). |
