    MAY DAY

May 1st has been celebrated as the international Labor Day or May Day in many countries. On this day, people take to the streets and participate in demonstrations or marches to make social and political demands. This tradition was particularly strong in the Soviet Union. May Day still draws a big celebration in Ukraine and is marked with a three-day holiday. Living standards are low in Ukraine today, but low wages and an economic crisis are still not enough to bring people out to protest on the streets. Instead, most Ukrainians use the May Day holiday to go on picnics near their houses and spend time outdoors.
